Sketch Assignment 5: I Overslept!!!

When waking up this morning (Sunday the 28th) I set my alarm for 7:45 so I could go grab my soccer bag from the locker room at 8 when Woodpec opened. When 7:45 rolled around I thought I would give myself 10 more minutes to sleep. When I finally woke up it was 9 and I had missed the opportunity to get my soccer bag. Fast forward to this afternoon I was trying to brainstorm an idea for my Triptych. I thought back to this morning and thought it could be a fun idea to take my experience from this morning and make it a 3 panel comic. It was a fun idea that I really enjoyed making especially my second panel. I got my inspiration from Stitches by David Small. Specifically the close up of David on the table about to get an X-ray. The most challenging part of this assignment was coming up with what I was gonna draw in the 3 panels. I was able to come up with my idea pretty easily as it had just happened to me, but coming up what I was actually gonna draw was a bit more difficult. I’d say that crafting this comic strip is another step in our journey to crafting our much bigger piece in our full comic. Starting from our avatar, moving towards the combo photo, and now this comic strip. We continue to develop our skills and become closer each week to being able to develop our own comic. I would say that it is different in its advancement. This comic strip is much closer to an actual comic than the previous assignments that we have done.

Sketch Assignment 4: Flash Lens

Coming up with an idea for an idea for this assignment was pretty difficult honestly and was the longest part. I spent two to three days brainstorming an Idea for this project and it just clicked randomly in my head that a flashlight could act as a flash for a camera. Even after coming up with my idea I still needed to create it which was a difficult part. I had to watch multiple videos to help me create my idea that I had in my head. I honestly really enjoyed this project I was able to be creative as well as improve my digital art skills. Sunday Sketch Assignment 3: How we Decide: Individual Decision Theory

These are my notes that I took during Microeconomics. During this lecture we learned the basic fundamental Ideas of Individual decision theory focusing on Economic Surplus, Opportunity cost and Decision Pitfalls. I felt that adding these visual representations to my notes has actually been very helpful especially for studying. When it comes to understanding the basic definitions having a picture allows me to easily understand what I am being asked to understand and remember. For example when looking over my notes in the top left corner you can see the section where we went over Economic Surplus. To help me better understand what Economic Surplus is I added a picture of a full pizza with a slice left over. This represents exactly what economic surplus is an excess of a good or service when supply exceeds demand. I definitely found this sketch assignment enjoyable and found it very helpful for my understanding of my notes and for studying for a quiz that I will have on Monday. My Microeconomics class is a lecture class with one hundred and eighty people so it is often easy to get distracted and not fully understand the points the professor is trying to make. By going back and analyzing my notes taking visual notes I was able to fully understand the concepts that we are going over.

Literacy Narrative Reflection

In my literacy narrative: Lighting the Reading Spark, I tell a story of how a trip to my grandparents’ house helped kickstart my reading and writing journey. The simple act of my grandmother buying a book for me and my brother during our trip to visit them in the summer of my third-grade year was much more powerful than I could ever imagine. It completely changed my view on reading, school, and even myself.   I found writing this narrative very enjoyable. By using the free writing style, I was able to put raw Ideas to paper without any guidelines. Going through the prewriting exercise was especially helpful through this process as I was able to encapsulate the same feelings that I had during the trip to my grandparents. I was able to think back to a very positive time in my life when I had no worries or responsibilities.   Through this literacy narrative, I realized how one small moment can influence who I am. This trip from third grade, which I thought nothing of at the time, sparked my interest in reading which also allowed me to become a more confident writer. Before this trip I had thought that writing was just “not my thing” and that I simply wasn’t born with the ability to read well. But I see now that at that moment it just hadn’t clicked yet. I’ve come to realize the same can be true in other areas of my life as well.   The most powerful sentence in my narrative that I think will stand out to readers is “I don’t know if it was the book or the atmosphere I was in that made this moment so memorable”. To me, this line really captures what my narrative is about – It’s not just about the book, but the feeling and the environment that truly made this moment so memorable.

Sunday Sketch Assignment 2: Cap-tivating Kick

I was honestly shuffling through a few different ideas when I first started thinking about this sketch assignment. While passing my soccer ball around my room off the ottoman, I suddenly got the idea to do something soccer-related. That’s when I started looking around for an everyday object I could incorporate into the sketch as a soccer ball. As I was about to throw away an empty water bottle, I noticed the cap and realized it could work perfectly as the ball. That small discovery sparked the rest of the concept. Once I had the idea in place, I put pencil to paper and began sketching a person mid-air performing an acrobatic scissor kick I titled the piece “Cap-tivating Kick which ties in both the action and the real object I used. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment. It challenged me to be creative in a new way by combining a real object with a drawn scene. It was a fun and imaginative process that made the sketch come to life.

Sunday Sketch Assignment 1: Avatar

I chose this image as my avatar because it represents the best day I have ever had. In this picture, you can see the beautiful Amalfi Coast in Italy and a plate of vodka pasta, which was the meal I had in a small town along the coast. For Christmas in 2023, my family and I went to Italy for ten days. On the third day, we took a day trip to the Amalfi Coast, which is where my family originally comes from. We spent the entire day traveling between small towns and had the opportunity to interact with some of the locals. Our last stop was a little mom-and-pop restaurant that looked like someone’s home. We were immediately greeted by the owner and main chef—a welcoming grandmother. She offered us many different dishes to try, free of charge. One of these dishes was her famous vodka pasta, which I can still say is the best meal I have ever had. This assignment has made me reflect on amazing day with my family, where I learned more about where we came from and the life our ancestors may have lived. One difficulty I had while making this avatar was using basic editing apps and developing some photo editing skills. I had never used anything like this before, so I had to problem-solve and learn how to access photos and use editing tools. However, this assignment has definitely helped me develop a basic understanding of photo editing, which I hope will be useful both in this class and in my everyday life.
