Lights-Up

When first starting this assignment, I had trouble finding an object that I could turn into an art piece. I looked throughout all my drawers in my dorm and finally settled on an unused lightbulb that I had once planned on using for my room. At first, I was going to turn it into a balloon, but realizing that it would be too simple, I changed my idea to a hot air balloon. The biggest trouble I had with this was figuring out the scale for the basket. In my first sketch, I made the basket too big and in the second, too small. Despite this being a drawing, I still wanted it to look as realistic as possible, and for that to be true, the balloon part of the hot air balloon needed to be significantly larger. For my final sketch, I added in some clouds and birds, further representing that this drawing was taking place in the sky.

Blinged-Out Driver

My Sunday sketch is of a car with a gold steering wheel cover, but the cover is actually one of my bracelets I wear everyday. When I sit down to complete all of my homework for the week, I always take of my gold bracelets so they aren’t too noisy when I’m typing. I had just taken them off and I was thinking of what to do for my assignment. I decided to do my sketch with them because many everyday items have a circular shape and I thought I would have more options of things to sketch given their circular shape. I incorporated elements of my hometown in the Avatar assignment and I wanted to do the same here, and as I kept thinking I thought of doing a sketch of my car. The car depicted is the car I drove all throughout high school and I used a picture from my camera roll to model it as closely as possible. The interior of the car was relatively simple to sketch, except one thing I struggled with was figuring how much detail to go into. I didn’t know if I should make a whole landscape scene out the windshield or add multiple areas of shading on the seats. I ended up deciding to go with a more simple design because I felt that it made the steering wheel cover stand out more, and that’s how my Sunday sketch was made.

Literacy Narrative Reflection: Do I like writing?

My first literacy narrative is about my journey and formative experiences as a reader and writer. Without giving too much away, said experiences were not just school assignments but rather experiences that brought out important emotions and discoveries. The narrative is somewhat chronological as I think back to my first memories of reading and writing and then branch off into elementary, middle, and high school experiences.  The whole process was a series of new experiences. To start, in order to warm up for the narrative, I did a free writing assignment which was something I had never really done before. While a lot of the writing I pumped out in the warmup was sloppy, I was able to recall certain experiences so much more vividly and all they needed was a little bit of polishing. I thought of it as stretching before a basketball game. It’s sort of annoying and it would be more fun to get right into the action, but it really helps you flow and perform. I also found myself getting a little sentimental when having such vivid memories. Maybe it’s because I miss my family a lot and I’m pretty homesick but I felt back home for a little while when doing the exercises. The vividness of my memories that came up from doing the exercises definitely show up in my essay. The other new experience was the essay itself. I had never thought back to my experiences as a reader and writer before and I had also never written an essay in the style that I did. I wrote in a way that was somewhat loose and journalistic while still keeping in mind that it was for a class and needed to be submitted. As I wrote the essay, I put all my memories down onto paper and then analyzed how they affected my relationship with the skills. I thought about how the skills are taught in schools and why I thought about them negatively for so long. The essay helped me realize how much joy the skills had brought me in my life and how they also built my personality, teaching me how to feel different complex emotions. Writing the essay was a lot of fun for me. I found that it didn’t feel as hard or as daunting as most essays that length would usually be to me. I got to flow and put my thoughts down on paper without needing to think too hard. My final sentence was one that a lot of people would be intrigued by. The sentence was the concept of a chart with every reading and writing experience I had ever had and a scale to see how formative they were. Would the most memorable experiences be the most formative? An interesting question to ponder.

sk2: Skyscrapers

Having read the assignment and admired Niemann’s beautiful work, I was quite lost on how I would be able to create anything similar to his work. While I didn’t end up making anything that looks like it would be Niemann’s, “skyscrapers” certainly is something. My brainstorming process involved listing my favorite things in different categories. My favorite movie is “Up”, so the inspiration for my composition came from that. While looking for objects around me which I could use to make the work “multimodal”, I locked eyes with the bowl of fruit in front of me. The grapes and blueberries began to look a lot like balloons in the moment, and that’s what they came out to be. Of course, a 2D house on a piece of lined paper doesn’t mean anything with some fruit attached to it on a string. So, in addition to the fruit, I crumpled up some Clorox wipes to add a cloud effect below my houses. Now, they’re really skyscrapers.

Sunday Sketch Assignment 1: Avatar

I chose this image as my avatar because it represents the best day I have ever had. In this picture, you can see the beautiful Amalfi Coast in Italy and a plate of vodka pasta, which was the meal I had in a small town along the coast. For Christmas in 2023, my family and I went to Italy for ten days. On the third day, we took a day trip to the Amalfi Coast, which is where my family originally comes from. We spent the entire day traveling between small towns and had the opportunity to interact with some of the locals. Our last stop was a little mom-and-pop restaurant that looked like someone’s home. We were immediately greeted by the owner and main chef—a welcoming grandmother. She offered us many different dishes to try, free of charge. One of these dishes was her famous vodka pasta, which I can still say is the best meal I have ever had. This assignment has made me reflect on amazing day with my family, where I learned more about where we came from and the life our ancestors may have lived. One difficulty I had while making this avatar was using basic editing apps and developing some photo editing skills. I had never used anything like this before, so I had to problem-solve and learn how to access photos and use editing tools. However, this assignment has definitely helped me develop a basic understanding of photo editing, which I hope will be useful both in this class and in my everyday life. My name is Oliver Lu. I was born in Vancouver but raised in southern China. I have chosen the cover art of Radiohead’s In Rainbows as the background of my profile photo because music has been the center of my life—both as art and as a sign of my personality. In that album, much of the album reveals the beauty of anarchy: despite the frenzied, sometimes chaotic, arrangements, there is a persistent undertow of hope that lead vocalist Thom Yorke brings to the table. The remainder of my photos show who I am and what I love. A photo on the beach shows how much I love photography; I believe photography lets me capture moments of fleetingness of the world’s natural beauty. I’ve also put a photo of Shibuya Sky from the top of a trip to Japan. Travel always lifts me up when I am down or numb because it lets me see the world in a whole view again.

I chose these three images because they all represent key components of my life. The background image is a photo of me swimming at a state championship swim meet. It demonstrates my passion for swim and the significant role it plays in my everyday life. The photo of my dogs highlights my love for animals and my family. Lastly, the photo of me and my friends represents how important my friends are to me and how I cherish them. The images included in my avatar are all taken by me or friends,

AVATAR

I chose my avatar to be a bowl of ice cream from the DCT, but I replaced the M&M toppings with different sunset/sunrise photos I’ve taken from my hometown. The bowl of ice cream not only represents my love for ice cream and desserts, but my transition to college. DCT ice cream has now replaced my weekly fro-yo runs in California and has become my new normal. It’s weird to think about, although I recognize this campus is my new home and my new normal. Going for ice cream is also one of my favorite things to do with my new college friends and even when I’m done at Emory, ice cream will remind me of them. As for the sunset pictures, I feel that I appreciate the world’s beauty the most when looking at the sky during a sunset/sunrise. I’m the type of person that will lag behind my friends during a walk to admire the sky or schedule my runs for 6am just so I can see the sun emerge from the horizon and bloom shades of pink and orange. I tried to incorporate aspects of my real home, CA, and my new home, Emory, in this avatar because ultimately, both parts shape me the person I am now.

When it came to creating this avatar I wanted to incorporate details about myself both personally and academically. Focusing on the personal aspect in my avatar, I decided to pull two images from my camera that focused on my nationality and home life. When looking at the background of my avatar a semi transparent image can be seen of colorful handmade toys. I chose this image specifically because it was taken at a small costal town in Guatemala. Through this image I am able to highlight my Guatemalan background and culture. Looking towards the center of the avatar my brother can be seen sitting and smiling. My brother and overall family play a big role in who and how I am, which I why I chose this specific picture of one of our family outings. Moving on to the academic details in the image, I chose to add a background of medical tools because my passion for working in the medical field. When making this avatar i ran in to very few issues. I used my computers built in editing app that has clear instructions for the editing tools. The images used to create this avatar were all gathered from my camera roll.

I chose three pictures that I took personally to incorporate into my collage. As a child of an immigrant family, I was raised in China, grew up in Hungary, and matured in the US. The left most picture depicts a sunrise in my hometown of SuZhou, the Venice of China. Known for our silk and rivers, the picture was taken near my childhood home, on a bridge, and on a “silk” street: perfectly encompassing my Chinese heritage. In the middle, the picture shows a sunny afternoon in front of the parliament building of Budapest, the center of where I spent another 7 years of my life at. Despite the beautiful architecture scattered across the country, the largest exporter of foie gras, and rich culture originating from the steppes of Euroasia, the country remains under appreciated. Finally, the right most picture is of a sunset with my baby sister, Sierra, as the main character. Moving with me to the New Jersey, my parents gave birth to Sierra during my sophmore year of high school in the states. Despite our age gap, she has taught my many lessons about life and family, something I will miss during these four years. Overall, the three pictures come together to represent my formal years and the respective time I have spent living in those places during the day.
