Beginning this narrative, I decided to structure my writing to follow a timeline from childhood to now. By setting up my free writing this way, I was able to tell my story without the pressure of having to have five paragraphs with an introduction and conclusion. At first, writing this narrative felt strange since I was not following the standard essay structure but instead writing and structuring my story based on what felt right. I wrote in a way I felt flowed best and effectively answered the prompts question. As I was writing, I began looking at my different experiences with reading and writing as being more impactful than I initially thought. Since I entered school with no understanding of English, all the effort it took to finally get my reading and writing skills to what they are today made me value these skills greatly. Not wanting all my time and effort to go to waste, I have used these skills to read and educate myself on important topics and then write about them so others can learn as well.

My first day of school, like many others, began with crying for my parents who left me in a strange place surrounded by other crying children. Over time, however, I and all the other crying children eventually caught on to why we were here. We had just begun our educational journey of learning many crucial skills that we would need for the rest of our social and academic lives. Out of all of those skills we would soon develop, the most important were reading and writing. Once these skills were developed, they would be used for the rest of our lives, whether it be to read the morning newspaper or to write our name at the top of an assignment.
At the beginning of my educational journey, the path to developing my reading and writing skills was not the smoothest. I entered kindergarten with no background experience nor knowledge of the English language. Having only ever spoken Spanish up to that point, I knew I would have to put in double the effort to develop these crucial skills. For most of my kindergarten year, I would practice speaking English to friends and family until I eventually got it down. After that I spent the next couple years of my elementary school learning how to read and write English. I was put down for every and any tutoring session taking place at my elementary school so I could have the maximum amount of support. Along with the frequent tutoring sessions, I was put in English as Second Language(ESL) classes where I was given extra support. As time passed, so did my comprehension of these skills grow, until eventually I was able to read and write just like my peers. Since I had to put in double the time and effort to learn a skill that came much easier to them, it created a sense of pride in my childlike mind. Despite having come into school greatly behind compared to other students, I had put in time and occasional tears of annoyance to have these fundamental skills I knew I could rely on for the rest of my life.

Entering middle and high school, I held a sense of confidence and eagerness to put my reading and writing to use and expand them even more. As time passed, these skills were definitely put to the test. No longer was I reading picture books that consisted of a handful of words. Now I was diving into pictureless books that held what felt like obscure and complex meanings. I was expected to read passages that held meanings I couldn’t decipher and worse to write essays about that meaning. That once giddy and eager feeling that I associated with reading and writing was long gone. Now I was being presented with daily passages that felt indecipherable and a major hassle. Even so, I knew I could navigate through this new style of reading and writing with the right amount of commitment. I pushed my writing skills by digging deeper and picking out what the author of these passages was truly trying to say. After repeated effort, my reading skills developed a new perspective towards these passages. I now saw these words and stories as windows to different unseen perspectives. My understanding of what my reading and writing skills offered expanded from only being used to read or write children’s tales to articles discussing real world issues and passages that brought upon deep complex thoughts. Now I could use my skills of reading to deepen my own knowledge of real life situations. Even more, I could now use my writing skills to project my own thoughts and ideas of what I’ve read and express myself in a new productive way.
Now having a good amount of exposure to both fictional entertainment based stories and complex forms of writing crafted by researchers or poets, I use my reading and writing abilities to their fullest potential. In today’s age, where changes are happening all around us, I make sure to read and keep up with these complex changes and use my writing ability to voice these complex topics in hopes of educating those around me. The effort it took to develop the skills I have today has fueled my passion to use them to their best potential by reading relevant passages that allude to modern day issues. Through my comprehension of these topics, I not only educate myself but also those around me through my ability to express myself through writing. While my writing isn’t as complex or revolutionary as passages I’ve read, I use my ability of expression to share what I’ve learned of world history and matters to share and educate those who don’t use their reading skills to empower themselves.
While completing my literacy narrative assignment, I found it a lot easier since I was telling a story rather than writing an analytical paper. Doing the memory exercise allowed for my writing to have a lot more imagery than it typically would have. I learned that I do enjoy writing essays and that it can be fun, especially when there is less structure. Throughout the paper, I discuss what it was like for me to go to a school that didn’t know how to properly teach students with learning differences. And at the time, as an undiagnosed kid with dyslexic, I had to deal with always feeling behind. I think that someone may think the most interesting sentence from my essay is “From that day on, I missed social studies class for the rest of the year.” Just because even now I’m surprised at the fact that I would have to miss one class in order to catch up on another.
I came up with the idea of using a USB converter as a tooth because I love electronics and I have a lot of cords and ports and plugs all around my desk in my dorm. I used the item as a tooth in a smile because during most of my youth I did not have my set of two front teeth due to a surgery I had and the USB converter reminded me of the teeth that I didn’t have. I started with a pencil outline of the teeth then decided to go over in in pen to make the teeth pop as well and then I placed the USB converter in the front set of teeth to represent my childhood.
My essay was about how an experience where I was praised in kindergarten for extra effort and that shaped my perfectionism. I talked about how I struggle to submit writing that isn’t up to my high standard, as shown in my essay sentence ‘“Done is better than perfect” is my family’s motto, but no matter how many times I’ve heard it, I’ve never been able to live by it’. This sentence is the most interesting because it is both my hook and a summary of the ideas in my essay.
I enjoyed writing this essay and it helped me realize a lot about my habits as a writer. I realize that one moment had a larger impact on my writing journey than I previously thought. I also learned about what processes help me to write productively, specifically an outline. We were told to do prewriting assignments and they were incredibly helpful. I enjoyed have an outline for my essay because I often write without one and I sometimes struggle to start. Having the list of details from the event itself allowed me to write a more detailed recollection of the event, which I think is more interesting for the reader. Overall, this was an eye-opening assignment for me.
Chasing Rainbows, Chasing Perfection
I got this idea when I noticed that the USB for my mouse resembles the head of characters in Minecraft. I used a pencil to draw rectangles that make up the figure’s body and positioned the USB as the head. I didn’t have any other drawing equipment except pencils. I disconnected each part of the figure’s body to give it a more lively and dynamic feel. I did not want it to look rigid.

After writing the rough draft of my essay, I felt oddly refreshed. I had not written in a while, so just going with the flow, writing down whatever came to my mind. I was surprised by how much I had in my mind to put onto my computer, and it really reflected my entire journey for how I came to be the person I am now.
I saw that this assignment was due 1 day before the due date , and was quite worried at first. I had never made something like this before , and I spent the day wondering what I could make, when randomly, while spinning my pen around my fingers during my business class, I had a eureka moment. Growing up , I would go to sleep fidgeting with a pen and imagining new worlds and scenarios in which the pen would represent rockets and missiles . I decided to return to that memory and sketch one of those scenarios. In my drawing, the pen becomes a rocket lifting off from Earth, taking me back to a time when the possibilities were infinite and nothing was out of the realm of reality.
When I was writing my Literary Narrative, I tried to remember influential reading and writing moments in my life. The first thing that came to mind were my non-fiction science books that I used to read when I was very young. Honestly, those books made me realize internally why I wanted to take the comic English so badly. I tried brainstorming an essay about those books but I was not able to come up with enough content to write an essay. My next most influential reading moments were Wonder and Born a Crime: Trevor Noah. I thought deeply about that and realized that those books were the ones that enabled me to change my writing style. I wrote about those books and how they were able to open up my creative mind and enable me to write better and stronger essays.
