Snack or Animal?

The image on the left was taken by India Iacono and the image on the right it from Flickr
I started out this assignment by searching Flickr for possible images that I could crop into one. After 10 minutes or so, I found this task much harder than I initially thought it would be. I eventually settled on the idea of doing something with a fish. I originally wanted to do the head of a fish and the legs of a person. However, I couldn’t find a proper photo that I could crop in as the legs. Then I realized that since I was doing a fish, I could change my fish to a goldfish and have the second half of the body also be a goldfish, just as it would be the snack. My final image is like a play on words because they both have the same name, but the images are completely different. One is a goldfish like the animal, while the other is a Goldfish like the cheesy snack.

Sketch 4: Horsin’ Around 2.0

When I was drafting my idea for this assignment, I drew inspiration from a recent animated series I watched, BoJack Horseman. It is one of my favorite shows on Netflix because of the way it reveals underlying societal issues through a deceptively lighthearted style, with anthropomorphic animals in human-like bodies. I wanted to recreate an image of BoJack using real-life photographs. One of the main challenges I faced was fitting the horse head onto the man in the business suit, since the proportions did not align perfectly. I tried experimenting with other images as well, but they did not work out as I had hoped. My final composition conveys a sense of goofiness—after all, it’s a horse head on a human body—but it also reflects my appreciation for BoJack Horseman and its exploration of themes like depression, substance abuse, and the need to reconcile with one’s past. Sketch 4: MicroCone

For todays sketch I decided to try my hand at using some editing tools on Pixlr and I created a Microcone! I originally started off thinking about doing a sunflower with a microphone handle but when I looked up microphone I immediately saw the vision of an ice cream cone and a microphone combined. The name adds points as well. Discovering tools on Pixlr was definitely fun but frustrating, this took me longer than I would like to admit but I like the finished product.

New York v Georgia

For this assignment, I wanted to do something unserious but had sentimental importance behind it so I did something focused on me being homesick. In New York, it’s slowly approaching jacket weather and will soon be fall-winter. However, here, in Georgia, the bun beams throughout the whole day. This juxtaposition is highlighted with the top half of the image being a sunny bright sky, while the bottom is snow. A challenge I faced while completing this assignment was finding an engaging way to outline me being homesick. Top image Bottom image

Religion 100R Visual Notes

I chose to visualize the notes of my favorite court case covered in my religion class so far. The case is about a Christian baker who refuses to make a custom cake for a gay couple, however he says they can get a pre-made cake. He refuses to make a custom one because it goes against his religious beliefs. The court case is based on the question of should business owners be able to turn down customers based off their religion?

What are the odds?

For this assignment, I was contemplating doing something deep in interpretation or doing something simple. I ended up doing something in the middle. The pink digital camera in the stick figures’ hand was the camera I was gifted last year for my 17th birthday by a close friend who attended Emory’s Pre-college program with me. With that camera, I was able to document moments from last summer during my time in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s truly crazy because I never would’ve thought that I would be going to college here. On the other side of my drawing, is the same stick figure opening her acceptance letter to Emory University on December 11th, 2024. So again I ask, what are the odds?

Popping Statistics

I struggled with writing these visual notes because I took few notes in highschool. However, I found that when I could create an image out of the notes, it would help me understand the material a lot better. I think I chose the perfect class for visual notes because with probability equations, it is difficult to comprehend without a real life perception. With drawing the real life examples, it allows me to easily see when the equations would be used outside of my statistics class. I thought this sketch allowed me to break my comfort zone and find a new method of taking notes.

Literary Narrative Reflection

I wanted to take a storyline approach rather than answering the question straightforwardly. I think the story telling allowed for my progression in how I view writing to be highlighted in a unique way. I truly believe that the exercise helped me avoid getting writer’s block and I was able to implement a LOT of the answers that I gave to the questions into my essay unintentionally.

Sunday Sketch 3

I decided to use my anthropology notes to draw a sketch explaining the difference between relative poverty and absolute poverty. Throughout this course I have been a bit confused as this is the first time that I am taking an anthropology course but this sketch helped me understand the difference between the two a bit more. Relative poverty is where one has a significant amount less compared to others around them, while absolute poverty is where one has absolutely nothing while others around them have more whether that is a small or a big amount. While drawing this simple sketch, I found that visualizing the material can help me in understanding confusing topics. During this assignment I found it interesting because it was difficult to understand and to put it into a visual was a bit more challenging as well.

Visual note taking. sk3

I chose to convert my FIN201 class’s notes because we studied an interesting topic, quotas. Converting my normal notes into visual notes was a new experience for me, and I have to say, it did help me solidify the concepts in my head. As I tried to come up with ideas for visuals I could use, I realised that I had some questions regarding the topic which would not have arisen had I not thought about the concepts visually. Overall, I found the prospect of visual note-taking quite intriguing and enjoyable yet time-consuming, as well. here is a link to the original assignment
