Sunday Sketch 4: Steaming White Rice

I decided to combine two photos, one of a shower head and the other of rice being poured into a bowl. I had the inspiration for this by looking through the provided link of what photos had previously been combined and wanted to do something relating to water. I thought about waterfalls and rivers but was not sure what to combine then with but then I thought of a simple shower head. After staring at this image for a while I realized that the small streams of water looks similar to grains of rice. I then searched the internet for pictures of white rice on a black background and combined the photos using Canva. I simply cropped each picture and laid them on top of each other. I did try to add effects with the smoke to make the photos transition a bit smoother but I was not able to do this without Canva Plus. Finally I think my finals picture conveys the importance of food and water are both important in sustaining life and have varying importances that can coincide.

Light It Up

First I looked at the Combophotos on the Tumblr website. I tried to find some photos on google and hoped for an inspiration but it did not work for me. So I turned inside my mind to envision my design first. After some thought, I decided I would do something with a weapon. I came across a photo of mortar firing and I immediately connected it to fireworks. However, the photo of mortar I initially found was took in daylight, which means it has a different color scheme with the firework picture. Thus I found one at night. I also adjusted the angle of the firework picture a little bit so the trajectory fits. I think my Combophoto conveys the idea of victory, since weapon connotes war and fireworks usually means celebration. Photo Credits

Cloudy Falls #sk4

When I first saw this assignment, I got to thinking about what two natural occurrences combine into something fluid and smooth. Waterfalls immediately came to my mind because the water falling is smooth and continuous, almost like it’s flowing from the sky. Then I realized that I can connect the waterfall to something in the sky, and that is where I came up with the clouds. The soft, airy texture of the clouds mixed with the endless flowing of the waterfall combined to make one flowing photo where cloud turns into waterfall. My main idea was to capture movement and showing how that occurs coincidentally in nature. Photo Credits: Google Chrome

Snack or Animal?

The image on the left was taken by India Iacono and the image on the right it from Flickr
I started out this assignment by searching Flickr for possible images that I could crop into one. After 10 minutes or so, I found this task much harder than I initially thought it would be. I eventually settled on the idea of doing something with a fish. I originally wanted to do the head of a fish and the legs of a person. However, I couldn’t find a proper photo that I could crop in as the legs. Then I realized that since I was doing a fish, I could change my fish to a goldfish and have the second half of the body also be a goldfish, just as it would be the snack. My final image is like a play on words because they both have the same name, but the images are completely different. One is a goldfish like the animal, while the other is a Goldfish like the cheesy snack.

Sketch 4: MicroCone

For todays sketch I decided to try my hand at using some editing tools on Pixlr and I created a Microcone! I originally started off thinking about doing a sunflower with a microphone handle but when I looked up microphone I immediately saw the vision of an ice cream cone and a microphone combined. The name adds points as well. Discovering tools on Pixlr was definitely fun but frustrating, this took me longer than I would like to admit but I like the finished product.

New York v Georgia

For this assignment, I wanted to do something unserious but had sentimental importance behind it so I did something focused on me being homesick. In New York, it’s slowly approaching jacket weather and will soon be fall-winter. However, here, in Georgia, the bun beams throughout the whole day. This juxtaposition is highlighted with the top half of the image being a sunny bright sky, while the bottom is snow. A challenge I faced while completing this assignment was finding an engaging way to outline me being homesick. Top image Bottom image

Sketch 4: Combophoto

Due: 9/23

Stephen Mcmennamy is an Atlanta artist and Creative Director who was at the advertising firm BBDO. He first came to my attention when I saw his series of “combophotos” that splice together two different images to form a surreal new creation.

Here are a few examples from him:

cauliflower + poodle

paintbrush + spaghetti

bridge + guitar

Take a few moments to look through the images he’s posted on his site linked above or on his Tumblr or his Instagram. Notice that each of these is just two rectangular images set next to each other to create a single square image. There’s no need to copy & paste or layer anything in Photoshop — simply crop two images and set them alongside each other to create a new image.

Then create your own square combophoto and publish it to your site. You can take your own photos, but probably you’ll want to use Creative Commons-licensed images you find on Flickr or Google images — make sure you give credit to the originals that you modify to create your combophoto.

The level of technical aptitude for this assignment is actually relatively small, just simple cropping and resizing. The greater part of the challenge is thinking creatively and finding images that you can work with. That said, note that Mcmennamy comes up with ideas and then specifically stages photos to combine, and he seems to often spend significant amounts of time shooting and selecting his images. You won’t have lots of time, models you can hire, or expensive photo equipment to work with, so I don’t necessarily expect your final images to be as polished and perfectly aligned as his are. More important is for you to be playful and come up with images that combine to create something funny or witty or striking.

To edit the two photos together, you can use whatever photo editing software you’d like. Pixlr is a good free web app, as is PicMonkey. Adobe Photoshop is also available for you to use on the computers in the Media Library on the 4th floor of the Woodruff Library.

Once you have your image, publish it in a post on your class site. Don’t forget to give it a funny or witty title! Tag your post “sk4“

Write a paragraph about how you went about choosing the two images you combined and why. What challenges did you face as you created your combophoto? What do you think your final image conveys?
