When it came to creating this avatar I wanted to incorporate details about myself both personally and academically. Focusing on the personal aspect in my avatar, I decided to pull two images from my camera that focused on my nationality and home life. When looking at the background of my avatar a semi transparent image can be seen of colorful handmade toys. I chose this image specifically because it was taken at a small costal town in Guatemala. Through this image I am able to highlight my Guatemalan background and culture. Looking towards the center of the avatar my brother can be seen sitting and smiling. My brother and overall family play a big role in who and how I am, which I why I chose this specific picture of one of our family outings. Moving on to the academic details in the image, I chose to add a background of medical tools because my passion for working in the medical field. When making this avatar i ran in to very few issues. I used my computers built in editing app that has clear instructions for the editing tools. The images used to create this avatar were all gathered from my camera roll.

I chose three pictures that I took personally to incorporate into my collage. As a child of an immigrant family, I was raised in China, grew up in Hungary, and matured in the US. The left most picture depicts a sunrise in my hometown of SuZhou, the Venice of China. Known for our silk and rivers, the picture was taken near my childhood home, on a bridge, and on a “silk” street: perfectly encompassing my Chinese heritage. In the middle, the picture shows a sunny afternoon in front of the parliament building of Budapest, the center of where I spent another 7 years of my life at. Despite the beautiful architecture scattered across the country, the largest exporter of foie gras, and rich culture originating from the steppes of Euroasia, the country remains under appreciated. Finally, the right most picture is of a sunset with my baby sister, Sierra, as the main character. Moving with me to the New Jersey, my parents gave birth to Sierra during my sophmore year of high school in the states. Despite our age gap, she has taught my many lessons about life and family, something I will miss during these four years. Overall, the three pictures come together to represent my formal years and the respective time I have spent living in those places during the day.

Start on your literacy narratives

Looking ahead to next week, you should be thinking about the fact that you have two assignments due on 9/9: sketch 2 and the first part of the literacy narrative.

The literacy narrative asks that you begin with a pre-writing exercise called “X-pages.” I’d recommend that you go ahead and begin doing that freewriting as soon as possible. The steps are clearly outlined:

  • Make a list of ten memories that you associate with reading and/or writing
  • Circle the memory that is most vivid
  • Answer 20 questions about that memory (I’ve even included audio of me reading the questions with pauses between them, so you can just jot down thoughts while you listen)
  • Do a brief freewrite about that memory, responding to some questions listed in the post

None of that is actually the literacy narrative itself. It’s writing you will do before you actually write the literacy narrative. Your literacy narrative might be directly about the subject you focused on for the X-page exercise, but it does not have to be. The pre-writing is to get you thinking and writing so that when you turn to the assignment itself, you are primed and ready to write.

Once you’ve written your 3-5 page (750-1250 words) literacy narrative essay, you will publish it as a new page to your site. Then you will write a reflection post about the writing process.

I’m happy to answer questions about the assignment in class on Thursday.

I first hand drew an outline of a jersey and then used Canva to make a neon jersey. Then I combined the images and put my last name over the jersey. This represents my involvement in various soccer programs throughout my life and the different styles of comics we may discover throughout this class. My drawing skills are not the best so I had some difficulty making the hand drawn jersey as similar size to the one I created in Canva but I ended up putting them side by side to get similar sizes. https://www.canva.com/

This is the avatar that I chose for myself. Behold, the chicken on a beach. Why a chicken on a beach? Well, the answer could be simple. Chickens have always been my favorite animal, and beaches are my favorite place to go. In simplicity, it’s a perfect representation of myself. However, it’s meaning in respects to the class goes deeper than just a chicken on a beach. In life, you’ll often find yourself out of your comfort zone, or in places that you don’t necessarily see yourself fitting in at first. Such a scenario happens regularly for me – even in this very class. Although I have a passion for reading, and I enjoy writing, the realm of comic books and graphic novels is completely new to me. I’m not the most artistic person by any means, and I can’t remember the last time I read a graphic novel. In a sense, I’m out of my comfort zone, and I am the chicken on the beach. In respects to my artistic style/vision (and my lack of ability), this slightly unorganized and slightly unorthodox avatar foreshadows my likely abstract drawing style. Additionally, as a reflection of my personality, I believe that my sense of humor/lightheartedness shines through my funny chicken on a beach. At least it was funny to me. Ultimately, I am proud to have this chicken on a beach as my personal creation, and my avatar for this class. (All images were drawn from creative commons and flickr. I chose to include a picture of a horse, the Korean flag, a camera lens, and a camera in the photo because they are all important parts of my identity. The camera lens and the camera express my passion for photography, which is an important way of capturing and sharing my perspective with the world. I incorporated a camera lens as part of my eyes to show that a photograph can also help us understand how we interpret and view our world. Additionally, the picture of the horse depicts my dedication as a horse advocate for the welfare of horses, as well as my passion for show jumping. Ultimately, I discovered a Korean flag to represent my heritage and cultural identity. One difficulty I faced in creating this badge was finding a way to condense all the meaningful items that represent me into a single frame. I did not want to paste all the images into one frame using Photoshop, and I wanted to share a story of my interest in a creative way. A lot of the images I incorporated in my avatar relate to my hobbies. The most noticeable feature, the stormtrooper line art, represents my love of the Star Wars franchise. The image in the top-left corner is a page from my favorite manga, One Piece. I also play soccer and tennis. I think I like soccer more so I put two pictures into the design, one on the field, another on the bench. The image in the top-right corner shows everyone in my high school watching the solar eclipse that happened last year. The last image in the left-bottom corner is from last summer when I was playing laser tag with my middle school friends. I struggled deciding where to start creating my avatar. I spent a good amount of time reading through the directions, looking at the sample student post, and pondering what my avatar should look like. Eventually I got inspired by the logo of my favorite video game, Counter-Strike 2, which has a white soldier silhouette in the center and yellow and blue backgrounds. After I got started, everything went pretty smooth. Image Sources

My name is Laura Li, and I am from Shanghai. For my avatar, I chose to draw a picture of myself, my cat, and my favorite food: soup dumplings or xiaolongbao. I chose a simple comic style, which represents my personality: positive, humble, and inquisitive. I love drawing and caring for animals. I especially love cats and have had a cat named Mimi for eight years. My cat and xiaolongbao are the two things that remind me of home and represent my life and culture. I hope to carry them with me as I begin my new experience here at Emory. Some difficulties I faced when creating the badge were thinking about what elements to include with a limited picture size, so I needed to scale down to the three things that are most important to represent me: a picture of myself that showcases my personality, my favorite food, and my favorite animal.
