SK1

I first hand drew an outline of a jersey and then used Canva to make a neon jersey. Then I combined the images and put my last name over the jersey. This represents my involvement in various soccer programs throughout my life and the different styles of comics we may discover throughout this class. My drawing skills are not the best so I had some difficulty making the hand drawn jersey as similar size to the one I created in Canva but I ended up putting them side by side to get similar sizes. https://www.canva.com/

sk1: My Avatar – Ibrahim (Ibi) Karabay

The current image has no alternative text. The file name is: avatar-2.png
This is the avatar that I chose for myself. Behold, the chicken on a beach. Why a chicken on a beach? Well, the answer could be simple. Chickens have always been my favorite animal, and beaches are my favorite place to go. In simplicity, it’s a perfect representation of myself. However, it’s meaning in respects to the class goes deeper than just a chicken on a beach. In life, you’ll often find yourself out of your comfort zone, or in places that you don’t necessarily see yourself fitting in at first. Such a scenario happens regularly for me – even in this very class. Although I have a passion for reading, and I enjoy writing, the realm of comic books and graphic novels is completely new to me. I’m not the most artistic person by any means, and I can’t remember the last time I read a graphic novel. In a sense, I’m out of my comfort zone, and I am the chicken on the beach. In respects to my artistic style/vision (and my lack of ability), this slightly unorganized and slightly unorthodox avatar foreshadows my likely abstract drawing style. Additionally, as a reflection of my personality, I believe that my sense of humor/lightheartedness shines through my funny chicken on a beach. At least it was funny to me. Ultimately, I am proud to have this chicken on a beach as my personal creation, and my avatar for this class. (All images were drawn from creative commons and flickr. I chose to include a picture of a horse, the Korean flag, a camera lens, and a camera in the photo because they are all important parts of my identity. The camera lens and the camera express my passion for photography, which is an important way of capturing and sharing my perspective with the world. I incorporated a camera lens as part of my eyes to show that a photograph can also help us understand how we interpret and view our world. Additionally, the picture of the horse depicts my dedication as a horse advocate for the welfare of horses, as well as my passion for show jumping. Ultimately, I discovered a Korean flag to represent my heritage and cultural identity. One difficulty I faced in creating this badge was finding a way to condense all the meaningful items that represent me into a single frame. I did not want to paste all the images into one frame using Photoshop, and I wanted to share a story of my interest in a creative way. A lot of the images I incorporated in my avatar relate to my hobbies. The most noticeable feature, the stormtrooper line art, represents my love of the Star Wars franchise. The image in the top-left corner is a page from my favorite manga, One Piece. I also play soccer and tennis. I think I like soccer more so I put two pictures into the design, one on the field, another on the bench. The image in the top-right corner shows everyone in my high school watching the solar eclipse that happened last year. The last image in the left-bottom corner is from last summer when I was playing laser tag with my middle school friends. I struggled deciding where to start creating my avatar. I spent a good amount of time reading through the directions, looking at the sample student post, and pondering what my avatar should look like. Eventually I got inspired by the logo of my favorite video game, Counter-Strike 2, which has a white soldier silhouette in the center and yellow and blue backgrounds. After I got started, everything went pretty smooth. Image Sources

My name is Laura Li, and I am from Shanghai. For my avatar, I chose to draw a picture of myself, my cat, and my favorite food: soup dumplings or xiaolongbao. I chose a simple comic style, which represents my personality: positive, humble, and inquisitive. I love drawing and caring for animals. I especially love cats and have had a cat named Mimi for eight years. My cat and xiaolongbao are the two things that remind me of home and represent my life and culture. I hope to carry them with me as I begin my new experience here at Emory. Some difficulties I faced when creating the badge were thinking about what elements to include with a limited picture size, so I needed to scale down to the three things that are most important to represent me: a picture of myself that showcases my personality, my favorite food, and my favorite animal. I chose to create my avatar as a collage incorporating aspects of my personality, such as where I am from and things and places I love. Specifically, the background of my image is a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on a roll, which is one of my favorite foods. In the foreground of my image is my name with different cut-outs, with some of my favorite places in New York City (where I am from). The I in this image is the view I have from the corner of my apartment building, which is of the Empire State Building. The N is a cutout from the subway line, the one train, that I used to take to school every day. The D in the collage is the Washington Square Arch, a park that I would walk through on my way home with my friends almost every day. Finally, the A is a picture taken from the Battery Park Pier on the lower west side of Manhattan, facing Jersey City, another spot that I would often visit with my friends. All these images were taken by me throughout my years of growing up in New York City.

Avatar

Hi everyone! My name is Sebastian and my avatar is a photo by artist Georgina Young aptly titled Ninjadog. I chose this dapper looking dog as my avatar because I felt that it encapsulated me as a person and it also goes along with my website title: NinjaBooks3. Growing up, before I started playing basketball I loved martial arts and got all the way up to blackbelt. I also loved dogs and this dog in particular seems rebellious and ready to take on the world which is the attitude I want people to get from me when they encounter me. An avatar serves as a first impression and to me this Ninja Dog is a perfect example of who I strive to be. Put together, able to strike at any time, serious but silly, all in one picture.

Sketch 1: Avatar

Due: 9/2

Tag: sk1

Objectives:

  • Very basic photo editing
  • Introduction to the concept of Creative Commons
  • Uploading and publishing to your new WordPress site
  • Visual images as representations of complex conceptual topics

Avatar

Once you’ve created your web site, you need an image to represent yourself and/or your site for the class: an avatar. Your avatar can be whatever you want it be but try to create something that both reflects your personality and speaks to the topic for this class in some way.

Start by choosing one or more of your own photos as the basis of the avatar, drawing something yourself and scanning it, or finding one or more Creative Commons-licensed images on Flickr that you can modify. (Make certain to keep a note for yourself of the URL for the photos you use if they are not your own.)

CC-licensed images

Creative Commons licenses work with copyright law so that creators can share their work in a way that allows others to use it with attribution. The video on the left gives a good overview of the concept of Creative Commons licensing. The one on the right gives more explanation of how they work. They are short and worth watching.

You can find CC-licensed images by choosing licensed images on Flickr or with an advanced Google image search.

Edit Photo

Crop and otherwise edit the photo(s) in a photo editing application (like Photoshop or Pixlr). You can create a layered or collage effect, if you’d like. Add your name on your badge in such a way that it’s legible — it can be your full name, just your first name, or the nickname you want to be called this semester.

Your final badge should be square and at least 512 pixels wide and high. Please make certain your badge is square so that it will fit into the design on the student sites page.

Publish

When you’re done, you’ll need to put the image two places, with an optional third:

First

Load the badge into your Media Library and publish it to your site in a blog post. (If adding it as a feature image means that the entire square image won’t display, then also insert the image into the post itself.)

Include information and links in the post about the source(s) for images included in your badge.

Write a paragraph or two about why you chose those images, what aspects of yourself and your interests are represented in your badge, and/or what difficulties you faced in creating the badge.

Please tag your post with the tag “sk1,” plus any additional tags that you think are appropriate.

Second

Go into your dashboard to Settings > General and select “Change Site Icon.” Load the image as your site icon.

Finally

If you do not already have a gravatar, create a gravatar account and load your avatar there. From then on, your avatar will show up as your picture when you leave comments here and on other students’ sites.
